Reforestation by Farmers in Mexico
Your offset is created by Bruno Soria Rangel near Pinal de Amoles in Mexico. Mr. Rangel and his family reforested a .52 hectacre plot. Planting native trees on unused land provides much needed income to a farmer and his family. All while removing carbon from the environment. See the trees on Google Maps
- The Sierra Gorda Mountains have some of the highest rates of poverty in Mexico.
- This project reduces poverty by providing landowners with financial incentives to reforest their land. Their compensation from reforestation is equal to or better than average income from agriculture.
Environmental Benefits:
- Mexico has been largely deforested. More than one million hectares are logged each year.
- Reforestation within the Biosphere Reserve restores watersheds by reducing soil erosion, all while removing carbon from the atmosphere with the newly planted trees.
Project Impact:
Bruno Soria Rangel is a farmer who lives and works near Pinal de Amoles in Mexico. Bruno and his family have reforested a .52 hectacre plot that was previously used for agricultural and livestock purposes in the Sierra Gorda Mountains. By restoring degraded farmlands to native forest, soil and water resources are protected and provide habitat for native species, while generating much needed income for Bruno and his family.
