The Connection Between Health and the Environment

If you have any sort of New Year’s resolution, it probably has something to do with being healthy. Or, perhaps you want to be “greener” this year? When you make healthier choices or live a greener lifestyle, you are actually helping promote the other cause as well. Learn what you can do in your state to improve Kansas health and environment!

Where you go: Do you drive? We know you’re probably in a hurry a lot of the time, but if you can slow down and take a walk instead of driving your car, you’ll improve Kansas health and environment. Walk to the grocery store and carry your goods in a canvas backpack—plastic grocery bags are filling dumps all over the world! If you have kids, walk to pick them up from school.

Not only will you burn some calories, you’ll avoid harming the environment with CO2.

What you eat: When you’re out to eat or cooking at home, pay attention to what’s on your plate. Too much red meat can harm your body because it is high in saturated fat and can raise your blood cholesterol. Purchasing and consuming a lot of red meat is bad for the environment, as well, because raising cows (and pigs and sheep, too) increases the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere.

Additionally, organic produce may be a tad pricier, but it is grown without the risk of pesticides or preservatives, which means it’s better for you as well as the Kansas health and environment.

We also can’t ignore snacking in a social situation. Instead of grabbing a high-calorie coffee treat or ice cream sundae while catching up with a friend, take a jog or hike around your community. You’ll burn calories instead of consuming them, and you’ll reduce the waste of plastic cups and wrappings on food you buy.

What you buy: Whether for yourself or for your kids’ lunches, you buy plastic bags, portion-sized chips, cookies, sodas, etc. This practice is bad for Kansas health and environment. Even if it is recyclable, it’s better not to throw anything out at all. Make yourself portion-ready snacks and store them in your refrigerator or, for your kids, invest in a cute lunchbox and use Tupperware and thermoses to store food you make for them.

These are just a few of the many tips you can use to live a healthier and greener lifestyle. Keep looking for ways that you can reduce your impact on the environment.
